"Revolution in Ukraine: A VICE News Dispatch"

via: vicenews

With protests in Ukraine turning deadly last week, VICE News went to Kiev’s Independence Square to document the Euromaidan movement’s struggle for the fate of the nation…

1. LIVESTREAM UKRAINIAN RIOTS [Ustream]
Between the riots, 3 deaths, sudden makeshift laws, and cellphone tappings, the whole situation can be a little hard to follow. Besides the surreal-ness of being able to watch it unfold live, click [here] to read the fully story…

2. BIEBER ARRESTED [LAtimes]
The only reason I’m mentioning this, is to hopefully help more people understand how useless it is to pay attention to this guy! Don’t be a dick and hate him because you think his music sucks…be informed and stop paying into his adolescent million dollar pitty party. I get it, he’s trying to break free of his cookie cutter popstar persona…by becoming the next member of the NWA? He’s not “cute” anymore, and he certainly isn’t “hard”…now he’s just an annoying drug pusher (who’s using YOUR money to feed his illegal binges).

3. MOCKINGJAY POSTER [FilmThrasher]
To lighten things up, here’s the first official release from Lionsgate of the next HungerGames movie…the third book…being split into a two-part film.

Something to look forward to in 2014…

:: VICE docs were my bread’n butter in college. I can’t wait to have something at least somewhat tangible to watch, listen to, and learn from again.

2013: The News

R.I.P. NELSON MANDELA 18.07.18 − 05.12.13
I only remember him from when I was a child. Hearing about him on the news, or reading about him in school books. How he worked really hard to help a lot of people. He was like, another Ghandi or Mother Theresa in my eyes. I don’t know much about his recent life, but I know he was a perfect example of how one person can change the world.

The Vatican offers Indulgences via Twitter!

:: So apparently, if you’re Catholic, and follow The Popes tweets…you can cash in on one of their oldest traditions. 140 characters = less time in Purgatory. Kay, so, yeah…

GeekWeek: Sidenote

:: Let’s not forget that while E3 and the WWDC are going on two big things are changing our world; Turkey is still being rocked by protests, and Dan Harmon is back on Community.

Daily Thoughts…

The more I read about the situation in Turkey, the more I realize I don’t really know much about our world. It’s a little overwhelming, humbling, and kicks my butt anytime I think something in my life is worth complaining about. Lately there’s been a lot of chatter about people’s dislike for Harper, or the NDP, and tax hikes…but it’s not like we have thousands of people protesting in the streets against police using extreme force.

People round here also just spent so much time complaining about 3 or 4 days of rain, a few washed out roads, and some minor flooding. Then I open up the National Post and see that Europe is being trashed by rain/floods. Puts things into perspective when we can’t go for bike rides because of rain…and they have 15 people that have died because cities are under water…

And then there’s the newest episode of Game Of Thrones. So basically, my emotions are all over the place right now.

1. GEEK RUMORS

Nolan Batman Returns [ign.com] So it looks like Christopher Nolan has been picked up by DC to oversee their movies, using his friend Zack Snyder to Directo choice pieces. Allegedly. Meaning that Christian Bale could be picking up the cape ‘n cowl for a fourth time. Possibly. While I think they should follow where DKR left off (with JGL) it’s a sound move by the company in an attempt that might put them on par with Marvel’s brickhouse lineup.

iPhone5S + iPadMini2 [AppleInsider.com] At this point it should be no surprise when a major company starts shipping out new product every year. CallOfDuty, AssassinsCreed, Apple Computers, even the James Bond franchise…all brands that know their audience will cough up the cash if they deliver the goods (no matter how unchanged or un-improved those goods are). If I hear any iPhone5 users complaining, I’ll break their phones for them so they have an excuse to upgrade!

2. CARRIE FISHER SAYS “YES” [i09.com
Princess Leia will be returning to the bigscreen in Disney’s StarWars:Episode7!!!

3. KOREAN WAR [CBC.ca]
If you’ve been following the news over the last few weeks, at all, you should know that North Korea has been hard at work trying to piss everyone off…
First they started sending off propaganda videos that depicted American cities being destroyed by N.Korean armies. Then they went ahead with nuclear weapons tests after the UN told them to stop. Now they’re threatening South Korea by vowing to restart the war that went into ceasefire back in 1953!
At this point it’s clear that SOMETHING is going to go down, it won’t be good, and it will have lasting effects. I have mixed emotions on the situation…and think that someone with a more political background and stronger viewpoint should weigh in here.

PS: If you’re into documentaries, check out the 4 part series by VICE that was shot when they smuggled themselves into North Korea!

Human Trafficking + The Bunker = This Friday
- I feel that far too often people brush off the idea of learning something, because they’re afraid they might have to do something with that knowledge afterwards. Not only is this a lame cop-out, it makes you a partner to the crime (in my eyes). We all KNOW stuff like this happens, and we KNOW that something like this (night) could teach us more…but we’d rather do the same ol’ crap that we always do with our lives. The great thing about this presentation, which I watched about a week ago, is that they don’t force you into some binding action. You watch, listen, learn, and are shown small things you can do that help contribute to a global effort.

We’ve teamed up with Pathway Church and the organization Not For Sale to bring a presentation that we feel everyone (especially Christians) need to witness.
Disclaimer* some scenes in the movie are pretty intense, parents should be advised if they’re bringing children

ASTEROID DA14 + CHELYABINSK METEORITE…

NASA has been posting information all day about “the closest known flyby of a rock this size” which is meant to pass by Earth TODAY (Friday).
To freak you out; it’s 45meters wide, and will pass within 27,000km…that’s closer than some weather satellites.

[more here]

Let’s freak you out more…

A 10ton meteor just struck the Russian city of Chelyabinsk this morning, injuring roughly 1000 people!
A photo album of the destruction caused can be seen [here]

1. RIP CANADIAN PENNY [TheProvince.com]
Today marks the first official day of the penny’s demise. What are you going to do with your leftovers?

2. KING RICHARD III FOUND! [LAtimes]
Yup, you know that King that you read about? Turns out his bones were found underneath a parking lot. More accurately the site where an ancient church once stood, is now buried under our feet…creepy…

3. KAYAPO UNDER SIEGE [Official]
This has been floating around a lot, and I don’t know ALL the details, but I know rather than say nothing I’ll keep the conversation going and hopefully truth is found and help is given…

4. HALO ON STEAM? [IGN.com]
Apparently Valve has registered for three Halo titles to become a part of the Steam community. While last week it was reported that this meant the games were finally coming to PC, now it’s going back to just a strong rumor (would be a sweet one!)

1. KONY CAMPAIGN CAUSES RIOT [AcholiTimes]
Invisible Children screened their viral video in the Ugandan town of Gulu…needless to say the locals weren’t fond of having their lives summed in that fashion. Many injured, one killed.

2. NO ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT FOR CANADA [NationalPost]
The 4th Season will not be available on Netflix to anyone outside of the US :( we’ll have to wait for the DVD…

3. COMMUNITY PORTALS [Video]
Someone was able to get a tutorial up on how to use Valve’s new Community Test Chambers initiative online!

4. TOP 50 AVENGERS [IGN]
In anticipation for this weekends release, the kings of nerd have released their favorite members of the worlds finest (and most of you probably thought there were only 6 of them hahaha)
