WHY I LOVE THE INTERNET [18]

Coffee & Multitasking v.114

1. RIP GAMING GIANTS
Atari - The US branch has filed for bankruptcy, and even the iconic logo is up for sale [8bitFuture.net]
THQ - These are the last days of one of the biggest companies in modern gaming [IGN.com]

2. NEW MUSIC
Lonely Island - New video “YOLO” and announcement for a new album in 2013 [video]
Lights - Acoustic covers of Lana Del Rey and Nirvana (w/ hubby) [video]

3. TWITTER “BRANCHES” OUT [blog]
The massive microblog has started a minivid counterpart called “Vine”
Of course I made an account, you can find me by searching for my Twitter handle @hebb or my username Boschmann

4. iOS UPDATE [Apple.com]
v.6 gets it’s first update today!

CES2013: My Thoughts

Not a lot stood out to me at this years event. Lots of TV’s, peripherals stating they would be the next “3D experience” or “virtual experience”. Mostly just the same ol’ from companies I don’t really care about. Here are (the only) three things that caught my attention…

1. Lenovo Table PC [Mashable]
This is the only product that could make me purchase a Windows PC. I love the idea of having a fully intractable device that can be used for different purposes for different means. Table, tablet, computer, boardgames, canvas…looks fun!

2. Piston [IGN video]
I’m kind of sad that this only got the spotlight because it ended up NOT being something affiliated with Valve (and the rumored “steambox” console they’re working on).

3. MS Illumiroom [IGN video]
I agree entirely with IGN critics. I think this is a great idea for ambience, but hate the idea of having my game extend beyond the screen. The ONLY way I’d find that practical is if you’re entire room was devoted to gaming…meaning…no bookshelves, or other surfaces for the “screen” to get messed up on. But then at that point, why not just strap on a VR helmet?

R.I.P. NINTENDO POWER
∆ The final issue of this iconic magazine will be printed for December 2012. It’s a sad day for a guy like me, who grew up with the weekend routine of running to the local library, after Saturday morning cartoons, to learn about the newest games. This was pre-internet, when the only way to get previews of new games was to pick up a zine. There were no trailers, new leaked info, and no need to worry about spoiler alerts. Each issue would have cheats/tricks for the games you loved, a sneak peak at games to come, and killer poster featuring that months start character! I guess this is a perfect example of the changing ways of technology. If even the most influential gamer-mag is forced to close it’s pages, it’s a good indication that eBooks are here to stay. It does look like they’ll be keeping back issues available for sale online, and I’ve heard rumors of possible new issues coming out for tablets…here’s hoping.

1. R.I.P. TWINKIES [MontrealGazette]
It seems everyone’s initial freakout over Hostess going out-of-business might be for nothing. The company might be selling off it’s assets, meaning we’ll still have WonderBread, HoHo’s, and Twinkies…

2. GOT3 [IGN.com]
The new teasers have come out for the next season of Game Of Thrones!

3. WiiU RELEASE!!!
Today’s the day Nintendo says goodbye to the Wii (and essentially the Gamecube) and launches it’s first HD next-gen console!
KOTAKU is currently featuring a ton of content on everything you need to know.
And to balance things out [here] and [here] are some reviews pointing out it’s flaws.

ANON ASKED: What games are you excited about for the 2012 holiday season?
MY ANSWER: Well I’ll be playing Halo4 until all my LIVE timecards run out, and I still have a lot of content in WoW:MoP to explore. But during my holidays I’ll most likely be sitting down and FINALLY finishing MassEffect3 :P

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE WiiU?

APPLE 23.10.12 EVENT: iPad Mini
Much like the iPhone5 event,  this is the announcement that everyone was expecting, but for some reason still seemed to be unsure of. What is it? Just a smaller version of something that already exists. A device meant to directly compete with tablets from Samsung and Google. It’s an iPad, for people that thought the iPad was too big…so…my mom. This was made for my mom. I’m more interested in how this upgrades their line of products. Notice how there is no OG iPad on there? Yeah, that’s bad news for a guy like me, who is still perfectly happy with my first version of this great product.

APPLE 23.10.12 EVENT: iMac
Did you ever think that a desktop could get this tiny? Forget my friend Carl’s massive 27” screen…this is what makes my baby look obsolete! While all the basic upgrades apply, like an even more HD’er cam, dual mics, and a screen that’s more resistant to glare…you have to wonder “How is this possible? Where does everything fit?”
INTRODUCING: The FUSION DRIVECombine an SSD and HDD and you’ve got the ability to paper thin desktop computers. On top of that they also announced an upgrade version of the 13” MacBook Pro which looks like a beefed up version of the MacBook Air.
