MY WEEKEND VIA IG [@hebb]
BBQ’ing, biking, and icecream with the babe. The raddest nephews birthday. Amazing breakfast and brunch. Learning new tricks on my iPad. Finally finishing my book. And the Game Of Thrones (Season2) premiere.
Weekend = success!
Why HungerGames Isn’t for Kids:
For those still thinking that this is a kids series, here’s an excerpt from the 3rd book Mockingjay;
The context is that the capitol city is under siege by the rebel army (comprised of the Districts) and the Peacekeepers (bad guys) have imprisoned/slaughtered a large group of toddlers and children in front of them.
“A wail rises from the crowd. The snow’s red and littered with undersized body parts. Many of the children die immediately, but others lie in agony on the ground.”
Why am I posting this? Because I’ve had many parents asking me lately, “should I take my kid to see the Hunger Games movie” after seeing commercials for it and thinking it’s this years teenage angst fest. I’ve said it so many times but for some reason people choose to not believe me; this isn’t a series for those not yet in highschool. While the movie plays down the violence of the first book, I don’t see how it will be possible to cover up the amount of gore in #3.
When I saw it in theaters, the entire row behind us was made up of 2 parents and 8 kids. Each of which became very uneasy and somewhat scared when characters began to get murdered off on screen (as if they weren’t expecting it / no one told them it was coming).
I still think this is a fantastic political/activist story that encapsulates how self absorbed our society is, but, shouldn’t be taken lightly because of the spotlight Hollywood has put it in. Parents; do your research.

Daily Thoughts…
It’s Thursday, my “blah” day. I finished tomorrow’s Bible Study a day early, my roommate is gone, and the only “work” I have left is some sketches. I’ve decided today will be a me day; continue reading through Book 2 of The Hunger Games, hopefully finish the Dark Brotherhood questline in Skyrim, and go over Purpose Driven Life for some future plans I have at The Bunker.
Lately I haven’t enjoyed days off, I like to keep busy and goal oriented to avoid becoming lazy. But, some news was dropped on me this week that could once again change the way I live…so…for now I’m relaxing, preparing, and enjoying the things that are in front of me right now.
CHRISTMAS EVE 2011
So glad Christmas is on the weekend this year :) I spent today grabbing some last minute gifts, saying goodbye to my favorite barista Kstud, and getting pretty dapper for tonight’s Church pageant…followed by an intense family dinner (my stooomach).
I’m in love with this coat, mostly because of the anchor buttons [closeup]
Also, my friends Eden and Beargen are helping me become a true gentleman with their fine gifts of; a pipe, mustache wax, and the first 3 books in the Harry Potter series.
Sweet ‘stache twirl [here] I just need to keep growing it out…
HOUSE OF M [comic] Review
I did this backwards, read Civil War before M, but oh well. It was explained to me as being one of (if not the) biggest event for Marvel Comics. I don’t know if I agree with that, but from the perspective of the mutant-society, I would say the repercussions have greater impact than anything else.
For anyone that is into where Marvel has brought their heroes these days it’s a must-read. Avengers has their “age of heroes” X-Men their “schism” even Fantastic Four and Spider Man have now teamed up (with the death of Torch) and all of it stems from House of M.
To sum up the 8 part series; Scarlet Witch (Magneto’s daughter) turns on the Avengers, loses control of her powers, and creates an alternate reality. Only a few heroes know the truth, and wage battle against the family of Magnus in an attempt to save Prof X and return the world to normal. In the end, Witch unleashes her powers in a last ditch effort that results in roughly 95% of the mutant population losting their powers. This of course makes things unsettling with humans, which sparks the Civil War series…
It’s a fun/short read for anyone that enjoys seeing massive hero-teamups. Definitely weird to see characters like Wolverine in charge of SHIELD, and refreshing to see someone like Peter Parker showing a more intense, less quirky, side.
Now I’m gonna dive into “Age of Apocalypse” and wait/hope that they port the “Onslaught” series into the iPad store.
So This Happened Today: POTTERMORE
By chance and good luck, I found a Quill, picked up the username “QuestLight77” and have found myself stumbling into the online world of Harry Potter!
I’m very stoked to finally have the ability to purchase eBook copies (trying to cutback on the number of physical items in my possession) and it’ll be interesting to find out what JK means by “readers shape the world of HP”.
CONSUMING YOUTH [book] Review
Leading teens through consumer culture…
By: John Berard
Straight out of my home of Manitoba, this book is a great instruction manual on two things; how to take ourselves out of a lifestyle of always wanting (more, more, more), and, how to build into young people and help them become useful members of society.
Being considered an “adolescent” myself (by cultures standards) I understand how it is to be swept aside because you don’t quite fit the mould. And working at a youth community center, I see on a regular basis, people trying to make sense out of life by consuming everything around them. Whether it’s through shopping, drinking, stealing, or cramming their schedule with as much work as possible…all these things take away from the life that was meant for us and replace it with an insatiable hunger for more. Now don’t get me wrong, I think drive and determination to reach a goal is great, but we live in a society where “more” is never enough. We’ve lost sight of our goals, and now reach to consume everything, even when others need it more than we do.
For youth workers, this book holds great insight into how to get young (and old) people involved in ministry. It’s not just a cheesy hint-guide, but rather, an insightful look into the mind of a young person searching for belonging in a Christian-world that has all but pushed them aside and said “let us handle this”.
A must read for those interested in youth ministry and pop culture.

Goosebumps!!!
I used to own every single one of these books, and honestly have no idea what happened to them :(
They probably got given to the local thrift store when I was going through my “get rid of my kiddie stuff ‘cause I’m a grown-up-teenager now” phase. I was a loser.
If I could, I would buy every one of them back. They inspired me to not only use my imagination, but got me excited about reading! Everyone had their favorites; usually the ones involving the ventriloquist dummy Slappy. However mine was the one which I believe is at the bottom in this pic (with the caped man jumping). It involved a young boy who found a cool/mysterious building, and when he walked in he was scanned by a weird machine that turned him into a super hero!
Like I said, it got my creative juices flowing; I used to write my own books and even mailed a letter to Mr. Stine once with one of my ideas (but never heard back).
At first I had to order them from the school library, and hide them from my parents; begging the librarian/teacher to not tell them. She was cool, she liked the fact that one of the biggest slackers and class clowns was sooo into reading, she never snitched ;) Eventually my parents accepted them, and I would definitely get my kids into these books!
…I’m gonna search for iBook copies right now!
On Tuesday, February 26, 2008, approximately seven thousand Starbucks were closed for three hours. And during those three hours, approximately one hundred thirty-five thousand employees were retrained in making coffee.
Schultz also made the decision that Starbucks would reduce the variety of breakfast sandwiches made and sold. Why would he make such a move?
The smell of sandwiches was competing with the aroma of coffee. And the aroma of coffee is essential in the Starbucks experience.
Geiger & Borton, Simple Student Ministry, 2009
Funny, I was in an Sbucks roughly a week ago and saw sandwiches, popcorn, chips, pastries, candy, CD’s, water bottles, juices, newspapers, etc. etc.
Thought a few of my friends back home would find this amusing.
