GPOY “Looking at Computers at Work” EDITION
This week I also ate a lot of cookies and wore a bear suit, kinda…
You can see it all on my Instagram [here]
OSX “Mountain Lion” [preview]
Apple’s operating system is getting another upgrade this summer, to 10.8!
You can watch this hands on video, but, here’s what I’m excited for…
iMessage: Now compatible across all Apple products, iOS+OSX
Reminders: I love it on the iPhone, and will love it on my iMac
GameCenter: The AppStore is great for gaming, but was missing the community that XboxLive offers…not anymore!

OS X Lion: The Next Day
Sitting with my MacBook, sipping some coffee, enjoying the newly laid out Mail and iCal Applications. Finding that Mission Control is something that is actually far more handy then Expose ever was. And that not having to wait for my Dashboard to load up (but instead simply slide over) is rather refreshing.
My friend William put it best;
Lion: it’s not, “WOW!!! This is amazing!!!”… it’s more like, “ah, this makes sense.”
I still haven’t been able to figure out how to delete those pesky Applications that I don’t use. And I just now noticed that while in full-screen mode on Chrome, drop-down menus are disabled, making it impossible to load the above screen shot.
However, the biggest achievement for Lion isn’t its redesigned Apps or flashy new gimmicks, it’s the ability to purchase/download new Operating System software ONCE and have it on all my Apple products. Getting rid of having to buy a physical copy is huge, bigger than I think most people are giving credit. I myself own an iMac and MacBook, and being able to just open the App Store and download it to both peripherals is refreshing :)
Yes, this is something that Linux has been doing for a while, and sure MS users may have some great ideas. But I am an Apple fanboy, therefore I am blogging about something I enjoy. I hope that my readers would be intelligent enough to go and write about something THEY like, rather than wasting time posting comments complaining about something that isn’t a part of their life. G’day.
OS X LION: First Impression(s)
1. Not being able to delete useless applications like Calculator or Chess is irritating, that was always the first thing I did when I updated operating systems. I never use them, they just take up space!
2. Reversing the scroll direction is dumb, everyone I know (so far) is reverting back to normal; you can do so by going into System Pref > Mouse
3. Launchpad is fun to play with, but I don’t really see myself using it.
4. I miss having Dashboard hover over my screen…I don’t like this weird separate steel-background screen.
5. Mission Control is cool, but again, probably won’t use.
It’s late, so I can’t check out all the new features, but I’m going to fall asleep while reading other reviews. My MacBook is currently updating and should be good-to-go for work tomorrow! Overall I think it’s a great leap forward for software releases, not having to buy a physical copy, I’m all for it.
The new family…
Picked up a used MacBook for dirt cheap today, finally something to do full editing at work (and play WoW on the go). Shortly after a good friend gave me his iPod Touch (1st gen) when he found out my iPod Nano had been stolen!
For those thinking it: Yes I do still use my iPad, fully, for everything from eBooks to writing weekly studies, to playing games. The iPhone4 is only loaded with communication apps, and the iPod is only for music.
I see this as an opportunity to use each device to it’s full potential with the Apps and programs they were designed for.
[post] E3 2011
This years GeekWeek was pretty epic! Micro$oft blew me away, Nintendo got me excited about my childhood favorites again, and Apple has me anticipating a very productive/fun school year.
So now that it’s all over, and we’ll be scrolling through page after page of updates on Kotaku and IGN, I figured I’d share what I’m most excited for this year in geekery!
FAVORITE KEYNOTE: Micro$oft
Not just for the oodles of content, or the grand slam finale, but for really utilizing the tech/games on that massive stage.
FAVORITE TRAILER: Halo 4
I mean c’mon, that was awesome.
FAVORITE UPGRADE: OS X Lion
I can’t wait to start multitasking between my iPad and iMac seamlessly.
FAVORITE TECH: Wii U
If you can purchase just the controller, I’m sold.
FAVORITE GAME: Gears of War 3
Halo would get this if it was coming out this year, and, GoW was the first series I got into on the 360…I’m very eager to finish the battle!
WHAT WERE YOUR FAVORITES?
iCLOUD
Centralized Hub: Think of it as taking Mobile Me, and making it useable (I don’t know about any other Mac users, but I never touched MM).
Free: Every user gets 5GB of storage at no cost.
iTunes: Every purchased track is copied/stored, however, burned or downloaded tracks need a $25-per-year subscription.
Integration: Many MobileMe features are now Apps that allow you to wireless sync your iOS and OSX devices.
Photostream: Snap a pic on your iPhone or iPad, and it auto syncs with iPhoto on your Mac, which is then stored for 30 days (unless otherwise specified)
Purchase History: Should have existed before, but now all your purchases are saved to help keep track and keep organized.
iWork: Now that it’s on all devices, your work will be cross-saved and cross-compatible automatically.
API’s: Third party Apps now have syncing capabilities with Apple software.
Backups: iCloud daily backs up all files automatically.
OS X 5 - WWDC 2011 Trailer
What Do You Think of the NEW iMac???
Thunderbolt - I don’t see a need to replace USB’s yet, my transfer time(s) have never been slow enough to make me desire something else.
FaceTimeHD Cam - Skype exists, so I think just like iChat before it, FaceTime will soon be a thing of the past.
QuadCore i7 + AMD Graphics - I’m all for finding new ways to up the power in a Mac, PC’s need the competition when it comes to video games.
So I’ve made a decision…
I’m going to sell Fallout: New Vegas; it just doesn’t grip me like #3 did (which was one of my favorite Xbox games). The mixing of 50’s + western era just ends up leaving a bad taste in my mouth. That and, like I said in my first-impression, the main character lacks any story whatsoever. I gave up on the main questline almost immediately and tried exploring, but got bored with the lack of interesting places/people. Also, I hate having separate social-status in each town! I liked in #3 that you were either good or bad…simple. If you’d like to purchase New Vegas off me just leave a message [here]
That being said; I picked up Portal1 again, this time on Steam, and played through the whole thing this evening. Portal2 is currently downloading, so I’m pretty stoked! I can’t stand having to dodge all the convo’s around me about how great the sequel is! Portal1 was my game when the Orange Box came out…it’s time to reclaim my crown!
