Me and @tylerkiros May Long 2012

For the past month SO MANY people kept mistaking me for Tyler on the Kiros poster for The Bunker concert. It got to the point where people were adding ME on Fbook thinking I was him (even his wife almost sent me a message ment for him…)
We decided that people are just focusing on the features, not how we actually look :P
Love you Ty! And all the boys in the band!

Facebook has gone public, or, “Zuckerberg secures place as future overlord”

[FinancialPost] [TechCrunch]

It’s been 6 years since I joined Facebook…
Now that timeline is a thing, I was able to go back and see just how many hours/days/years I’ve spent nurturing my presence online. Some would look at this and think “waste of time”, I see it as time well spent. I’ve had an internet outlet since Grade 9 (in the days of Geocities), and now using my connections through college and ministry, I’ve been able to take this hobby/interest and turn it into something of lasting value. To be able to reach out to people, learn alongside others, share information…and decline literally thousands of Farmville requests (yes I still get those). While I may have cursed Fbook’s birth from my little MySpace cave, I now fully embrace it as just another part of my life. The key is knowing when to type, and when to talk.

FOLLOW/UNFOLLOW: Online Friendship

I lost two followers on Instagram today…*sniff*…I don’t know who they were, but their point was made; they hate me. But wait, didn’t I unfollow two people on IG today? It must have been them, they must have unfollowed me because I unfollowed them first!
So…that means…they were only following me because I followed them? But that can’t be the case *pffft* no no no, then the content of my posts wouldn’t have mattered at all. Then they wouldn’t have even been paying attention to my posts, just using me to up their numbers. But that can’t be the case, people wouldn’t become my friend just for a silly number…would they? Would I? Would you?

I know that I only follow people who post things that interest me. Granted if you’re a close personal friend or family you automatically make the cut. And I should probably make it clear that if you go for long periods of time without posting (like weeks or months) then I’ll most likely X you off.

It’s nothing personal, you’re just not in my life enough for me to care…but then what’s getting me so worked up about losing your number on my friends list? Hmmm all these emotions, this constant refreshing of pages, always posting pictures of cute animals or tattooed chicks just to gain more random numbers…what is the point?!

Oh wait it’s just a website, and I’m not 14.
PS: Fbook isn’t meant for anything of substance anyway, so add me!

Our Social Timeline

Lately I’ve been noticing a pattern in social networking - timelines - the horizontally structured, online representation of our comings and goings throughout life. I think most (as was I) were introduced to this concept when Facebook gave us a peak into what their future layouts will look like; a giant banner at the top, followed by a single line down the middle with events/photos/status’ branching left and right. But with the recent update to the Path 2.0 App, I learned this is an old idea already (even though most are just catching onto Path now…). Even Twitters new update has given the site a somewhat timeline stream effect to it!

So my question is; what is it about knowing the exact time an event took place that has us so intrigued? I get that social networking gets old, just posting the same thing over and over, seeing the same ol’ trends in our newsfeeds day in and day out. So is this the next generation of connecting online?

What are your thoughts on the timeline effect?

Follow my Path!
As I typed that out I realized why they called it “path” duh…haha…genius. If you’re not on Instagram, then you haven’t seen this mornings storm of Cover pics. And if you haven’t already thought; “great, another social network” chances are I want to high five you, AND, will see you in my feed shortly :)
Best way (I think) to summarize this new portable social network; they’ve taken the timeline feature boasted by Fbook (for their coming update) and miniaturized it. Add in the ability to post tweet like status’, music, and share photos, and you have something for iOS and Android users that Google+ and Facebook WISH they had thought of. It’s clean, simple, and easy to use.

I love how seamlessly they’ve integrated it into Twitter; no stupid platforms or need for links. However, I’d love to see the same thing for photos with Instagram before I make this my go-to source.

Facebook: Timeline

A new way of using Facebook, and yes, that means more changes!
Recently they upgraded how the NewsFeed works, then I said [this] and once again you proved to be a source of hilarity my dear interwebz. Roughly every 3rd or 4th status update since has been about “changes suck” and I mean really…it’s a fricking website…if you don’t like it there’s many ways to deal with your ridiculousness.
1. Stop using Facebook
2. Use other social network sites; may I suggest Twitter, YouTube, a blog of sorts?
3. Die
4. Calm down; stop letting little things like the way a website looks upset you
5. Stop breathing my air
6. Realize that everything changes
7. You have a computer, the internet, and the ability to freely use it whenever you please because of opportunities in your life, whereas, millions of others are starving, dropping dead, being killed or tortured because of the opportunities in their lives. Grow up.

*ahem*
That being said, watch the above video, I think it neatly shows (in a very Apple-ish fashion) a more picturesque road that Facebook is traveling down. Watch out Tumblr, Zuckerberg is coming for you…
Oh and btw, I like all the new changes :)

MY Essential iPad Apps

I’ve had my iPad for a solid year now, and my friend Carl just bought his, so I thought it’d be interesting to share what I believe to be the top Apps for my favorite Apple product.

PRODUCTIVITY
iWork: This includes Pages, Numbers, and Keynote ($9 each)
Moleskine: A really nice, clean, simple note-taking App for those who enjoy physically writing stuff out but want to use the iPad to save space. (free)
*I mostly use the pre-loaded Notes app for jotting things down, it has the great built-in feature of emailing your notes to you once you’ve finished writing to help you not forget.
Remote: An Apple sanctioned App that lets you control synced iTunes with your iPad. (free)
Nightstand: A great alarm clock, with tons of built in features. (free)

READING
Holy Bible HD:
By far the easiest to use, clearest version, with great cross-version integration (free)
Kindle: Amazon has created a reading monster! The biggest library, and best friend to any college student - with most textbooks ranging in the $10 price range. (free)
*i also use iBooks, but it’s Canadian store is virtually empty
Flipboard: My favorite source for daily news. It takes websites, your Facebook newsfeed, and even Tweets, and organizes them in a neat magazine style layout. (was $9 - now free apparently)
Marvel: I used to be a huge comicbook junkie, and have picked up the habit again since downloading this app. With individual comics priced at $1.99 how can you go wrong!? (free)
*there is a DC app with same prices for fans of that universe

EDITING
PS Express:
Made for the iPhone, but just as helpful for minor on-the-go photo edits. (free)

VIDEOS
Netflix:
Get real, who doesn’t use this? (free)
Crackle: Like Nflix, but for those shows/movies that we loved and then forgot about (free)
Vimeo: Personally preferred over YouTube, but not as popular (free)

SOCIAL NETWORKING
MyPad: The best way to interact on Facebook with your iPad (free)
Checkin Map
:
Cause Foursquare is for chumps (free)
Google+: Very similar to the Fbook App, which in this case isn’t a bad thing (free)
IM+: Take your AIM, MSN, and Fbook/MySpace Chat and cram them all into one easy to use window (free)
*of course there’s the official Twitter and Tumblr apps that you should automatically have!

MUSIC
Beatwave:
Touch the squares and music happens; more like a game a music making device (free)
Drum Kit: Mess around with a full set of drums ($1)
Classical: A classic guitar on your screen. Not the easiest to use, but fun to play around with (free)

GAMES
Angry Birds Seasons HD LITE:
This version updates itself with the holidays…Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, etc. (free or $1.99 for full version)
Plants vs Zombies: My all time favorite iOS game ($3)
ZTP: Zombie vs redneck tower defence game (free)
NOVA 2: It’s the iOS answer to Halo ($7)
#sworcery: Has to be played to be understood………….  ($5)
X-MEN: The classic arcade multiplayer platformer, one of the best ($1)
E.Legacy: A great RPG for lovers of the PS1’s Final Fantasy series ($5)
SF IV: Street Fighter 4 in your hands, awesome! ($5)

[movie] Review
I can’t believe it took me, someone who lives online, this long to see a movie about Facebook! I went into this with the anticipation in seeing how something has forever changed the way we interact with each, and not only did I get that, but I was also able to see into the mind of a man with pure passion. Even though Zuckerberg is portrayed as somewhat of a jerk, and people have never really liked the guy, I for one find his zeal to accomplish a goal inspirational! There’s no need to talk about the story of Facebook, we’re all aware of the website…if not please crawl out from under your rock and go to www.facebook.com. What I mean is; this isn’t a movie about a website. This is a movie about passion, creativity, and the all out in-your-face attitude that drives a man to shut out the world around him in order to achieve something. I see a lot of myself in Zuckerberg, and what I mean by that is, I see my passion for youth ministry in his passion for Facebook. To him, it’s not just a thing, it’s a way of expressing himself…showing the world there can be more.Emotions aside, the movie was all kinds of awesome; the acting was clean and precise, the soundtrack by Trent Reznor sent chills up my spine, and the amount of witty-techno-jargon speedily delivered in each short sentence tickled my inner geek.I’ve seen the movie 3 times in the past 4 days, so I’m going to rate it…

1. Spider-Man the Musical
If you hadn’t heard, Bono (frontman for U2) has created a Broadway musical using Marvel’s key figure; your friendly neighbourhood wall crawler. Some say it’s a masterpiece, some say it sucks, I think the costumes at least look (kinda) cool.

2. @facebook.com
Zuckerburg has announced the new Facebook Message system, and though he claims it is not a Gmail killer…I still think (and agree with the Giz) that eventually all ways of communication will end up in one platform. Whether or not Facebook becomes the catalyst for that platform is yet to be seen.

3. This is Skyline
For those that remember; several weeks ago I asked you if you knew what Skyline was. I had fallen upon trailers for this alien-apocalyptic sci-fi thriller, and thought it looked pretty sweet…apparently I was wrong…

I just sat through a class where we compared women on their menstruel cycles to cyborgs…*shudder*…I’m going to cleanse my brain by pounding a case of Redbull, catching up on The Walking Dead, aaand I guess doing a little bit of homework.

If/When Fbook Dies, What Will YOU Turn To?

It seems that more and more people are deleting their Facebook pages and opting for different means of keeping in touch with their digital friends. So, what site is next? When MySpace “died” everyone thought Fbook would be it, then Twitter came along, and now everyone has a Tumblr…so…are we moving back into an era where people want full customization and rites over their pages or will the bland, spirit-killing Facebook have a revival?

Check out the link at the top of Giz’s page for the Top10 Reasons to ditch Fbook.
